Problem # 3 A 10 horsepower submersible pump is placed 25 feet below the lake surface. The pump discharge piping travels a total of 60 feet vertically and then 100 feet horizontally, and is plumbed into the side of a 10 foot tall, 10,000 gallon capacity water tank that is vented to the atmosphere. The discharge piping is 6 inch diameter, thereby making friction loss in the piping negligible. If the pump is capable of pumping 600 gallons per minute at 45 feet of head, and 300 gallons per minute at 70 feet of head, approximately how fast can the pump fill the tank? (See drawing below) |
