The following graph will give you some idea of how fast you can expect to move sediment. There are many variables that can affect the performance of your dredge pump. The following graph is intended to give you a general perception of the pumps capabilities under normal operating conditions. Your actual excavation rate could be less. Before we sell you a dredge, we will plot a system curve based upon your actual site conditions. The text book "minimum critical carrying velocity " for sand is 5 to 7 feet per second. This is the liquid velocity in your discharge hose required to prevent the sand from settling out and eventually plugging your hose. We recommend that you maintain 9 feet per second. This translates to maintaining a minimum of 200 gallons per minute in 3 inch hose. In the graph below, the intersection of the red pump curve and the brown 500' system curve represents this 9 feet per second threshold. In many applications, you will be pumping up to a higher location. Static head is the vertical elevation differential from the surface of the water body to the end of your discharge hose. The static head combined with the friction loss in the discharge hose is called "total dynamic head". The PSA-10 dredge pump is a high head pump with a steep performance curve. This means that it is capable of overcoming a great deal of static head with only a modest effect on performance. Clearly, higher static heads diminish the length of discharge hose that you can use in order to maintain 9 feet per second velocity. Once again, we will plot your actual system curve, and tell you exactly how much hose you can use. The black stinky mud that accumulates in most water bodies is usually relatively easy to pump. The text book minimum critical carrying velocity for this fine material is 3 to 5 feet per second. Once again, we prefer to utilize a more conservative value of 7 feet per second. As indicated by the graph below, our model PSA-10 dredge can safely transport mud to a distance of up 800 feet. |
